this could not be more unrelated to toy story 3

but ok pretend you've been sent back in time on a mission and you only have an hour to complete it. you can't bring anyone else or hop back and forth to get things, blah blah BASICALLY IT'S YOU ALONE AND DO IT NOW OR QUIT

anyway the mission is that you've been sent back to kill hitler while he's still a babby and has no power

he's just asleep in his crib all alone or something

CAN YOU DO IT

you would save countless amounts of people, but you would also personally kill a babby/change the future and possibly have consequences for it

omg no... :(

can't we just like...kidnap him and bring him to the future and let him go to art school or something?
I'M JUST SAYING

NOPE

SECONDED WITH BRINGING HIM TO ART SCHOOL

but seriously, that reminds me a lot of this book by Stephen Fry, where they DID 'kill' (or prevent the birth of Hitler) but something even worse happened as a result... like someone else because some sort of Hitler. And for some reason, I have a feeling that that would probably happen.

No, I wouldn't kill babby hitlah

[identity profile] roaring-softly.livejournal.com 2010-07-11 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't. Partially because the whole stabbing a baby thing (I don't think I could kill any other person, let alone a baby), but because I feel like, for good or bad, the Holocaust did happen, and hopefully humanity has learned from it, so to eliminate it entirely would be a mistake. Like how we can't ever take it out of the history books, no matter how awful it is to hear about, because it serves as a warning about how bad things can get when no one is willing to challenge authority.

these are my thoughts too

would it be different if the holocaust was already in effect, though, and you went back in time to assassinate him (or whatever) after he already did damage?

I don't think I'd be willing to go back in time at all, just because pretty much every movie/book that deals with time travel always seems to end with "OH NO YOU FUCKED EVERYTHING UP WHAT DID YOU DOOOOO" and while there are a couple that have ended well, I feel like I would screw it up.

Of course I couldn't do it. I couldn't even get to Germany in an hour! If I could, then how would I get to the hospital where he was born? How would I find him?

And if we were going to send an assassin back in time, wouldn't it be better to stop the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which started World War I, which ended with a treaty requiring Germany to pay huge reparations, which was a major contributor to the political climate that Hitler leveraged to take power? Or just make sure Hitler wasn't rejected from art school or something. Why wouldn't I, or someone else, have brought up these questions before sending me back in time?

I will pretend that answers your question.

WELL you're also magically in his room somehow when you go back
because
science or something

i chose hitler because it's kind of a common thing for people to say that if they went back in time, they would assassinate hitler. it was something that i was talking about with other people a few months ago, and the baby scenario came up. i thought it was a sort of interesting spin on it since it gets a totally different reaction out of people, and kept meaning to post it on lj but forgot ahahaha 6_9

[identity profile] chiadro.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if that's the situation, I think I'd do it, because the alternative is to condemn a whole lot of people to death. I could probably do it if my task were simple enough. Like, I don't think I could break a baby's neck, but I could probably shoot one. I'd have to put extraneous thoughts out of my mind, which gets harder as the task requires more involvement.

History, like the weather, is chaotic in detail but resilient to modest disruptions in the long term. The new history wouldn't be our history minus World War 2, but something different, similar, and probably slightly better. Don't assume that the lessons we learned in World War 2 would not be learned some other way. Don't forget that some great things probably failed to happen in our history.

Forgetting to post about Hitler on your LJ is probably a good thing. I mean, there are lots of other historical events that don't get enough attention (http://www.salon.com/may97/media/media970508.html).

[identity profile] sir-stache.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
that's a smart answer. it's a risky move since you don't know for sure what will happen, but i guess if things go wrong you can always just use the time machine again and stop yourself from killing him or something.

GOD HITLER
WHY YOU GOTTA HOG THE SPOTLIGHT LIKE THAT
